Medicare Supplement Plan N is one of 10 Medigap plans available for people who have Original Medicare Parts A and B. It’s called a Medigap plan because it helps fill in some of the gaps in healthcare coverage left behind by Original Medicare.

Let’s look at Plan N to determine whether it’s right for your healthcare needs.

Medicare Supplement Plan N Coverage

Medigap Plan N is also one of the most comprehensive plans available. It covers several types of deductibles, coinsurance, and copayments that you would otherwise have to pay out-of-pocket.

Like all Medigap plans, it covers 100 percent of your Original Medicare Part A coinsurance and hospital costs. Even after you’ve used your Original Medicare coverage, Medigap Supplement Plan N will cover an extra 365 days of inpatient hospital coverage.

Medigap Plan N also covers 100 percent of your Original Medicare Part B coinsurance. However, you will have a $20 copayment for certain office visits. You might also have to pay a $50 copayment for emergency room visits or outpatient hospital services.

Other plans, such as Medigap Plans A, B, C, D, F, G, and M, pay for 100 percent of Original Medicare Part B coinsurance as well as copayments. You’ll have to decide whether choosing a different plan, which might have higher premiums, will save you money over having to pay the occasional copayment out-of-pocket.

  • If you enjoy traveling internationally, Medicare Supplement Plan N might work well for you. It covers 80 percent of costs related to foreign travel emergencies, so if you need to visit the hospital overseas, you won’t have to pay as much out-of-pocket. Several other Medigap plans offer this coverage: Medigap Plans C, D, F, G, and M.
  • If you have Medicare Supplement Plan N, you’ll still have to pay your Original Medicare Part B deductible and excess charges.
  • A deductible is the amount of money you must pay each year before your healthcare insurance kicks in. For instance, the Original Medicare Part B deductible as of 2018 is $183.
  • Excess charges refer to the amount of money a provider, such as your physician, charges in excess of what Original Medicare covers. With Medigap Plan N, you’ll have to pay those excess charges out-of-pocket.

Medicare Supplement Plan N does, however, cover 100 percent of your Original Medicare Part A deductible, skilled nursing coinsurance, Original Medicare Part A hospice coinsurance or copayments, and your first three pints of blood each year.

Consider Medigap Plan N if you’re interested in a comprehensive Medicare Supplement plan that lends itself to international travel.
